This 8AM-5PM position provides Activity Therapy treatment for patients on the Sexual Predator Treatment Program units and other units assigned, in order to fulfill the mission/ vision of Larned State Hospital. The person in this position assists in the scheduling and implementation of Activity Therapy treatment program and provides Activity Therapy services.  Assist in the planning and implementation of Therapeutic and Leisure Activity Therapy sessions.  Provides Activity Therapy sessions as assigned for SPTP patients in physical activities, creative art, social skills, library, living skills, and leisure activities.

The Activity Therapist I must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the SPTP units, ages 18-85+. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit and department policy and procedure.

Minimum Qualifications: Four years experience in therapeutic recreation, horticulture therapy or one of the creative arts or therapy disciplines such as art, dance /movement or music therapy. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Special Qualifications/Education: Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification within 60-days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.  M.A.N.D.T. Certification within one month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.  Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate (within one year of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.)  Some positions require an approved drug test unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency.

Preferred Education or Experience:  Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as, but limited to, vocational rehabilitation, industrial arts, recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy, physical education, psychology, communications, horticulture therapy, education and criminal justice.  Prefer experience in working with psychiatric patients or offenders.  Prefer experience in teaching or demonstrating therapeutic activities.
