The City of Abilene, Kansas, population 6,893 is accepting applications for the position of Community Development Inspector. Under the supervision of the City of Abilene Community Development Director, the Inspector is a non-exempt position under FLSA which enforces and administers the uniform building, plumbing, electrical, and fire safety codes, nuisance conditions, weed control and other City codes as required.  This position surveys and inspects residential, commercial and industrial construction projects, checks for cross-connections in water utility, examines building plans before permits are issued, and serves as the City Forester.  This position assists with inspection, coordination and public communications for public infrastructure projects completed by the City as required.  This employee should possess strong mechanical aptitude, and strong communication and public relation skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Two to five years of building inspection experience and code enforcement is required.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required.  Completion of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment approved Cross-Connection Course is preferred.

Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of uniform building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and fire codes is required.  Some experience with code enforcement.  This employee should also possess a thorough knowledge of construction materials and methods, and federal, state, and city health and safety regulations.  The ability to operate department equipment, and to read and interpret reports, plans, specifications, and strong mechanical and oral and written communication skills are required.

Annual starting salary range is $41,641.60 to $45,572.80 depending on qualifications.  The City offers a competitive compensation package.
