Description

If you own or (agriculturally) lease land in the state of Kansas, and would like to create, enhance, or restore habitat, we can help. We offer technical assistance, cost-share assistance, assistance with USDA programs, and equipment loans depending on the projects you have in mind. We work with you to identify your specific goals and offer strategies and possible financial assistance to complete your project.* Public access to land is not required for most projects/practices.**

In the Smoky Hills region, we focus mainly on upland birds including Bobwhite Quail, Ring-necked Pheasant, and Greater Prairie Chicken. There has also been high interest in pollinator habitat. Most of these projects also improve habitat for deer and non-game wildlife.***

Examples of local projects include:
-Shrub plantings (e.g., chokecherry, American plum, golden currant)
-Brome/crop conversion to native grasses, and other native grass plantings
-Assistance with buffer strips and seed mixes
-Brush management
-Prescribed burning
-Wetland creation
-Pollinator plots

Please note: Even though public access is not required for most projects, in this region, we typically do not fund projects on CSA's or lands leased for hunting rights, in which those businesses or individuals will profit from the work we are trying to provide to the general public. There are exceptions for large and/or highly beneficial projects.

*Eligibility of most practices for financial assistance will rest with the individiual District Biologist based on the needs of that region.
**Some practices, such as food plots, are only available on lands leased to public access (e.g., WIHA), but most are not. We can still potentially offer technical assistance and advice depending on the project.
***In this district, we typically do not fund projects solely targeting deer or turkeys, but several projects still improve habitat for these species (e.g., shrub planting and wetland creation).
