Description

As is. Mfg. August 1945, rear sight missing ($59).The No. 5 MARK I rifle was made from 1944 to 1947 by Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley and Birmingham Small Arms Company. In that time Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley made 169,807 and Birmingham Small Arms Company 81,329 No. 5 rifles. The No. 5 Rifle fitted with its bayonet and scabbard. This lightened and shortened version of the No. 4 Rifle was designed to meet the needs of the British soldier in Jungle warfare. The No. 4 Rifle and No. 1 SMLE were found to be too long and heavy for jungle fighting. To ensure mobility of the soldiers in the jungle it was necessary to reduce the weight the soldier had to carry as much as possible. It was fundamentally the No. 4 Rifle reduced in weight, fitted with a barrel reduced in length, with a combined flash eliminator, bayonet standard, and foresight protector fitted to the muzzle. A special rubber pad was fitted to the butt to overcome the extra recoil resulting from the reduced weight of the rifle. The stock fore-end was shortened, exposing a greater length of barrel, and components were lightened wherever possible. The backsight was similar to the No. 4 Mark I sight but was graduated from 200 to 800 yards instead of to 1,300 yards. It proved a very popular weapon and, after the war, came near to replacing the No. 4 Rifle as the standard Infantry arm. The No. 5 was used in Burma and the South Pacific in WWII and in Korean War.
