Job Title: Certified Medication Aide, LTC

Department: Nursing, LTC

Responsible to: Director of Nursing, LTC

 

JOB FUNCTION:

EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. Must have successfully completed the Certified Medication Aide training program for the state of Kansas and in good standing with the State of Kansas.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE:

 

  1. Utilized tactful, diplomatic communication skills to interact in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
  2. Must be self-motivated and possess good judgment.
  3. Able to perform the physical/mental functions of this position.
  4. Must have good interpersonal communications skills.
  5. Must be able to maintain confidentiality, loyalty, integrity, and dignity and be tactful and patient.
  6. Must possess personal qualities that demonstrate the ability to care for others, i.e., sensitivity, patience, honesty, cheerfulness, willingness, reliability, positive attitude and observation skills.
  7. Must have initiative and use good judgment in recognizing symptoms indicative of a resident’s change in condition.
  8. Must be neat and clean in personal appearance and grooming.
  9. Must be of good physical and emotional health.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. Eye/Hand, Eye/Foot, Hand/Foot Coordination
  2. Normal eye sight, with or without corrective lenses.
  3. Normal hearing, with or without hearing aides.
  4. Motor coordination and manual dexterity.
  5. The ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
  6. Level 3 Physical Capacity Profile Test Score.  
  7. The ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

  1. Well-lit work area.
  2. Work with people under all conditions.
  3. Meet and talk with a wide variety of employees, visitors, and patients.
  4. Subject to frequent interruptions.
  5. Subject to stressful situations related to personnel related issues.
  6. Close visual work.
  7. Regularly works under deadlines.
  8. Occasionally exposed to patient elements.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.   Observes, reports, and records response of the resident to medications given.

2.   Relates side effects, interactions, and nursing implications of medications to nurse.

3.   Identifies responsibilities associated with control and storage of medications.

4.   Directs the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with the current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the long term care facility.

5.   Safeguards medication preparation and storage area.

6.   Responsible for requisition of medications.

7.   Notifies Charge Nurse and physician when medications are not available.

8.   Maintains an accurate account of controlled substances with nurse supervisor.

9.   Accounts for controlled medications by counting and signing off with the incoming shift.

10. Receives medications from pharmacy when delivered, checking contents against receipt and signing for medications.

11. Administers services such as administering medications, oxygen, blood sugar tests, breathing treatments, applying/changing dressings, colostomy care, care of the dead/dying etc. as required.

12. Performs and records vital signs as ordered by the physician or as requested by the RN or LPN. Takes and records pulses and BP as ordered at the time medication is to be given. Will assist with monthly vital signs and weights and document all in the residents’ electronic medical record (EMR).

13. Reports observations to the RN or LPN to assist with the nursing plan, and documents such in the resident’s EMR.

14. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control policies at all times. Maintains safe, clean environment (including medication room, cart, and refrigerator) and careful use of supplies and equipment.

1.   Attend staff meetings and inservices as assigned.

2.   Is knowledgeable of fire and disaster procedures and functions as directed.

3.   Assists the RN and LPN as requested.

4.   Performs other duties as assigned.

5.   Assists the Certified Nurses Aide with pertinent resident care as needed.

6.   Charts progress notes in an informative and descriptive manner.

7.   This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.
