Vintage Wedgwood Jasper Ware Nut Card Suit Dishes Diamond and Heart Blue and White Bridge Set
PLEASE NOTE: These dishes are genuine products of Josiah Wedgwood. Pieces that have a middle 'E' such as WEDGEWOOD or the mark "W S & Co," as well as "Wedgwood" were manufactured by William Smith & Co. who tried to pass off his wares as manufactured by Josiah Wedgwood.
These beautiful pair of Wedgwood nut dishes were originally part of a bridge set featuring all four card suits: heart, diamond, spade and club. Pictured are the heart and diamond. The white design in the bottom of the blue diamond depicts a lovely woman in Grecian style playing the lyre. The white design in the bottom of the blue heart depicts three lovely young women, perhaps the Three Graces: goddesses of gracefulness, the charms of beauty, and cheerful amusement. Each dish has a pretty floral border, also rendered in white -- the hallmark of Wedgwood's jasperware.
The dishes are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or flea bites. The diamond measures 5-3/4" from the top point to bottom; it is 4-1/2" wide from side tip to side tip. The dish stands 3/4" tall. The heart measures 4-5/8" from the crest of the upper curves to the pointed tip; it is 4-1/8" wide across the broadest part of the heart. It, too, stands 3/4" tall.
The bottom of each dish is impressed with the Wedgwood name (see photos of each). The bottom of the heart reads:
WEDGWOOD
MADE IN
ENGLAND
60
Below this is another mark (or perhaps two) that are incomplete and illegible.
The bottom of the diamond reads:
WEDGWOOD
MADE IN
ENGLAND
65 Z
The "MADE IN ENGLAND" portion of this mark looks like it was stamped twice as it has a shadow appearance.
