Here is an excerpt:

“Mother,” Razzy hollered, “Where is Chicken Soup?”

Sugar thought a bit before answering, but really asking, “She’s not in her roost?”

“No. Since sun up, she’s been gone.”

“Ohh, Chicken Soup! She likes to—”

“I know.” He could hear from memory what Sugar had said about Chicken Soup.

‘Chicken Soup likes to poke holes in almost anything, cars, buildings, and people. I like my chicken, but she can be terrible because that Delaware fowl doesn’t have a big brain in that large body.  Chicken Soup measures the biggest chicken in Sands County, and the largest in the state of Coronado, USA.   Chicken Soup is a one of a kind giant— worldwide.’

“This could be bad,” Sugar said. She puckered her lips, paused, and sputtered, “The USDA is taking the final soil samples for our organic certification.” Her announcement ended with a frown. She gestured at the ground. Her rubber boots had split at the toes.

Razzy shook his head, “Just don’t mention it. They may not even see Chicken Soup while they are out here. Why get them scared?”

“You’re right. This is a big farm, Chicken Soup could be anywhere.” Sugar agreed in a doubtful smile.

Tan with billowing muscles built from years of work on the farm, Razzy hugged his mother and headed to the field to work.

She followed the cement walk along the side of the house, reached for the gate handle on the rose covered fence on the back of the house. Those red roses released a wonderful scent that covered up the smell of natural fertilizer on the garden and fields. Chicken Soup was probably having a feast… somewhere. Sugar’s eyebrows furrowed.
