Vintage Pogo Figure Rare Proctor & Gamble Premium Walt Kelly Comic 1969

Have you heard the old saying that goes, "We have met the enemy and he is us"? That was written by Walt Kelly, creator of the Pogo comic strip. Pogo is the title and central character of a long-running daily American comic strip, created by cartoonist Walt Kelly. Set in the Okefenokee Swamp of the southeastern United States, the strip often engaged in social and political satire through the adventures of its anthropomorphic funny animal characters. Syndicated in 1949, Pogo ran continuously until 1973.

This is a unusual and very special estate sale find. This Pogo "action figure" is from the Walt Kelly comic strip. In 1969 Pogo and several of his comic strip friends came with several different brands of Proctor & Gamble detergents as part of a promotion for the Pogo Birthday Special. Walt Kelly personally sculpted the originals of the six comic strip figures: Pogo, Albert, Churchy, Howland, Porkypine and Beauregard.

Pogo is molded from a soft rubber-like material. He stands 4-1/4" tall and has a moveable head. The bottom of his feet are marked "POGO POSSUM 1968 WALT KELLY - MADE IN JAPAN." Pogo is in excellent condition. His colors are bright, and he has no stains.

Pogo would be a wonderful addition to any comic collector!
