Job Duty Description: This is skilled work in directing the operation and maintenance of physical plant and grounds.  Work involves supervision of skilled craft and trade workers in directing a small physical plant or a phase of a large physical plant. Work includes performing inspections of buildings, grounds, and physical plant facilities and determining need for maintenance and repair.

Minimum Qualifications:  Four years of experience in building trades or mechanical building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Performance Standards:  Supervises skilled or semi-skilled employees in the installation, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems, such as steam, heat, electrical power, refrigeration or water supply and sewage systems; explains procedures, demonstrates techniques and assists subordinates in the more difficult projects.  Supervises skilled crafts personnel in the maintenance and repair of buildings, property, and grounds throughout the agency; coordinates the work of skilled crafts personnel.  Performs periodic visual inspections of buildings, grounds, and physical plant facilities to monitor the operation and maintenance of equipment, and to check for needed repairs or adjustments.  Determines need for and plans maintenance or repair projects, including estimating and submitting cost and material needs; purchases materials and supplies for projects.  Maintains records of physical plant activities and personnel, such as the operations of mechanical equipment systems, the usage of fuel and supplies, and employee records and files.  Trains personnel in work methods, supply utilization and preventive maintenance techniques, to provide continued power and mechanical services to the agency.

A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual’s account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. Applicants are responsible for submitting their certificate with all other application materials to the hiring agency. This is in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.

Selection Process:  Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.

Veteran Preference Eligible (VPE):  This position is eligible for veterans’ preference.  Interested veterans must submit a DD 214 to the Department of Administration to be verified as a veteran under K.S.A. 73-201 prior to the vacancy close date.  Verified veterans who meet the selection criteria for this position will be invited for an interview.
