Description

The Crossroads Exhibit has arrived in northwest Kansas!  The Smithsonian Museum on Main Street exhibit opened May 1 in Norton at the Gloria Nelson Cultural Arts Center, which is the host site for the display.  Along with the Smithsonian exhibit in Norton, the Norton County Arts Council developed a special exhibit entitled “Breaking Ground, Tales of Norton County Fireballs”, for visitors to tour.  Five northwest area museums are partner sites for the Smithsonian Exhibit.  Each partner site developed a unique display for their area from the theme “Crossroads: Change in Rural America”.

The five partner sites are Oberlin, Goodland, Colby, Hoxie, and WaKeeney.  “Sod House Frontier: Homesteading on the Prairie” will be the feature exhibit for the Decatur County Museum in Oberlin.  In Goodland, the High Plains Museum has the exhibit “Sherman County Crossroads”.  The Prairie Museum of Art & History in Colby features their exhibit “Continuity & Change”.  “Sheridan County:135 Years of Planning, Progress, and Perseverance” is the exhibit on display at the museum in Hoxie.  The Trego County Historical Society’s exhibit is “Challenging Crossroads in Trego County”.

Brochures are available at the museum in WaKeeney for visitors to learn more about the events and programs at each location.  A special opportunity is available for guests to explore all six sites and then be entered in a drawing for prizes. The drawing will be held at the end of the six-week tour of the exhibits during the week of June 13.

The Trego County Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  Special hours will be Sundays throughout May from 1 to 4 p.m.

This exhibit is a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution and Humanities Kansas.
