Job Description

General Function:

To provide leadership to families, staff, and volunteers in implementing a quality early childhood


Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provides an open and inviting learning environment.

Provides positive guidance to children, encouraging self-discipline and problem-solving.

Implements a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on individual children’s strengths,

needs, interests, and cultural background.

Works with the coordinator to organize the environment to support children’s development.

Supports children’s learning in every area of the classroom and outdoors.

2. Works with families to create the educational curriculum through implementation of individual

programs based on strengths, needs and interests using an on-going assessment.

Insures completion of assessments on each child and includes families in the process.

Develops individualized program plans for each child.

Conducts two educational visits in the home with families.

Uses on-going assessment information to develop lesson plans.

3. Works jointly with families to help them develop quality life experiences.

Encourages and develops activities which promote family involvement.

Provides guidance and support at socializations.

Models skills which promote healthy environments for children.

Networks families with agencies and each other.

Promotes preventative wellness.

4. Provides competent Center management.

Carries out Performance Standards and established federal and local guidelines.

Notifies the Connections office and coordinator of absences as soon as possible and leaves

adequate plans for substitutes.

Takes care of school property and resource materials.

Attends and participates in staff meetings (when possible).

5. Provides support, training and feedback for staff, families and volunteers.

Trains and guides assistants and volunteers.

Evaluates assistants and volunteers on a timely basis.

Practices and encourages open communication.

Promotes effective problem-solving and conflict resolution.

6. Promotes and respects the Code of Ethical Conduct as set forth by the NAEYC.

Maintains a professional manner and appearance at all times.

Insures confidentiality.

Participates in the development and implementation of a professional development plan.

Adheres to a mandatory reporting policy for child abuse and neglect.

7. Completes all other duties as assigned.

Scope of position:

Reports to the Center Coordinator. Receives moderate supervision from coordinator and central office

staff. Supervises children and volunteers. Works with 1-8 staff members and volunteers. Position

requires decision-making related to children, staff and families. Ongoing staff development is an integral

part of the position.

Knowledge, skills, and technical ability:

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and a minimum of 60 hours of college credit in a

related field. (Early childhood or elementary education, nursing, or social services). Prefer candidates with

an AA in Early Childhood or Child Development Associates Credential (CDA in Infant-Toddler).

Must pass prior to starting position:

TB Skin Test

Physical Exam

Background Check

Willing to certify:

Child Development Associates Certification (Infant-Toddler)

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

First Aid


Good communication skills including oral, written, and listening.

Interpersonal skills working with children, volunteers, families and community members.

Ability to make good decisions.

Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

Willingness to work as a team player.

Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation.

Working conditions:

Works 80% of the time in the classroom. Conditions may include a high noise level, a fast-paced schedule,

some bending, lifting and carrying. About 15% of the time is spent in planning and paper work and 5% off

site which may include Home Visits. Must be able to lift, move and handle up to 50 pounds. Position

requires much physical activity interacting with children. Office space may be shared with other staff.

The full day, full year program consists of services being provided year round. The classroom will be open

during some days when there are normally no classes in USD 489. Days open will be established on a

yearly basis.


As per USD # 489 Salary Schedule for Parent Educators.

Term of Employment:

At will.

11 month (228 days) position.
