DESCRIPTION OF WORKUnder the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor; operates the communications center on assigned shifts; receives and dispatches emergency assistance to the public and to officials as calmly, quickly, efficiently, and accurately as possible; receives the public and handles or directs their requests to the appropriate departments. DUTIES: Essential Duties Are: Monitors and responds to appropriate units for all 911 calls for emergency assistance, to the hearing and speech impaired via a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD); screens and refers calls from emergency and/or administrative lines, providing and receiving detailed information concerning the call using fast, independent judgment; monitors and dispatches all calls for assistance via radio traffic for city, county, and state law enforcement agencies, fire and emergency medical services; assigns and maintains lists of case numbers for all police and sheriff investigation reports at the time assignments are made; following proper security and release information procedures, inquires on-line files through local and national computer terminals. Other Duties Include:  Performs a variety of other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of office methods, practices, and procedures; ability to quickly learn location of streets, parks, and major landmarks of city and county and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC); ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations; ability to learn and operate the radio/computer equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to work with the public using courtesy, tact, and firmness; ability to type 40 wpm; ability to perform sedentary work and to lift and carry up to 10 pounds; ability to sit for extended periods in a confined area and to walk, twist, reach, pick, pinch, and write; hand/eye/foot coordination adequate for operating keyboards, foot controls, and TTD; ability to speak clearly and concisely and to hear in person and on telephone and two-way radio; ability to see and read reports, records, and CRTs. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and one year of clerical experience dealing with public; typing desired. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to acquire and maintain NCIC certification with FBI; no felony convictions; possession of a valid driver’s license; updates educational requirements by completing all necessary schools and training provided by the City to comply with the position.
