DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Under supervision of the Director of Public Works or Parks Lead Worker, performs a wide variety of repair and maintenance of parks and parks facilities; performs minor repairs to buildings and recreation facilities. DUTIES: Essential Duties Are: Waters, mows, weeds, trims, and fertilizes lawn areas; rakes leaves; cleans walks, fields, courts, and other facilities; loads trimmings and trash on trucks; plants, transplants, removes, fertilizes, cultivates, waters, and sprays flowers and shrubs; sprays herbicides for weed control; installs, maintains, paints, and repairs playground, irrigation, and other park equipment; prepares and maintains ballfields and tennis courts; winterizes facilities; picks up paper and debris; operates power mower, edger, and similar equipment; operates trucks, tractors, and vehicles as required; maintains buildings by using a variety of hand tools in semi-skilled work; assists in preparation of annual budgets and current and long-range parks activities. Other Duties Include: Operation of snow plows and performance of work in assisting other departments when needed; performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works or Parks Lead Worker. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of grounds keeping, watering, seeding, turf and plant maintenance, and lawn cutting procedures; mechanical aptitude; ability to perform heavy physical work, to lift up to 100 pounds, and to lift and carry objects weighing 50-75 pounds; hand/eye/foot coordination to provide ability to operate power tools, light equipment and trucks; ability to repair and maintain garden tools and make minor repairs to sprinklers; ability to use a variety of hand tools in carpentry or concrete work; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to stand, walk, bend, pull, push, and perform similar body functions; ability to talk and hear in person and by two-way radio and telephone; ability to see for operating equipment, reading, and repairing facilities; ability to analyze situations and arrive at sound logical conclusions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other departments. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license; certification or other evidence of qualifications for handling and applying herbicides and pesticides.
