Bruce Matteson became a famous painter for the Presidents. He was born in Plainwell in 1932 and died in 1988 in South Haven. His father Estes Matteson, a firefighter for the paper mill, mother Opal Rader-Matteson and his sister Marlene were in Plainwell's 1940 census. His sister Janet came along a little later.
This is what was written regarding the picture: "Beautiful hunting scene print by artist Bruce Matteson (1936-1988). Signed in pencil. A limited edition print that shows a faithful Black Labrador Dog with his master’s catch. Number 169 of 960. “Bruce E. Matteson, 51, a resident of South Haven, Mich and a former Chicago commercial artist, drew animal portraits for three U.S. presidents. Mr. Matteson, a native of Plainwell, Mich., showed an early interest in animals and considered becoming a veterinarian. He chose art instead and studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles . He then did freelance work as an artist in Chicago, and among his clients were many sports organizations, including the Chicago Cubs, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association. He also drew for the American Medical Association and other clients. His artistic interest focused more on wildlife, and he moved to Peoria so he could concentrate on it. His work often appeared on magazine covers and more than 10 of his portraits became covers of ``Ducks Unlimited.”
