Job Title: Service Person I

Department: Public Works (Street)

Reports To: Street Supervisor

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Street Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, construction, and repair of streets, roadways, alleys, ditches, dikes, and other public works facilities and/or projects. This position is FLSA non-exempt.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

A.   Operates and maintains light vehicles and trucks up to 2 ½ tons, light tractors, and other equipment incidental to the work.

B.   Trains in the installing of signs.

C.   Assists the shop mechanic in the repair of equipment and vehicles.

D.   Assists the equipment operators with the maintenance of light to heavy equipment and dump trucks including but not limited to changing oil, frequent greasing, cleaning out air filters, etc.

E.   Performs building and facilities maintenance.

F.    Trains in the proper techniques for patching of potholes and crack sealing

G.   Salt and sands, spreads brine, and plows snow (pending a Class B CDL)

H.   Trains in the forming, pouring, and finishing of concrete

I.     Trains in the laying of asphalt with lutes and shovels

J.    Responds to after-hours emergencies

K.   Performs heavy manual labor

L.    Trains and assists in the setup and take down of temporary traffic control according to MUTCD standards.

M.  Assists and trains on the maintenance and repairs associated with the flood control levee including, but not limited to fence repairs, erosion repair, removal of trees, removal of debris from flood control channel, etc.

N.   Assists in the operation and maintenance of the compost site.

O.   Trains in the screening of compost.

P.   Performs other duties as assigned or required

 

Qualifications:

A.   Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

B.   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with governing body, city administrators, department heads, employees and the public.

C.   Ability to use sound judgment and common sense, think logically, and make appropriate decisions.

D.   Displays knowledge of the mechanical operation of diesel and gas-powered equipment.

E.   Follows all necessary safety guidelines in the operation of equipment.

F.    Ability to maintain and make minor repairs to equipment.

G.   Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

H.   Valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver’s license required, with air brake and tanker endorsement or able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.

 

Education/Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Some experience in construction and maintenance work, including some experience in the operation of medium and specialized equipment is preferred.

  

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily outside. Work is occasionally heavy and may involve physical activity such as lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying, and involves handling, seeing, hearing, listening, and talking. May involve after-hour calls and exposure to noise, noxious odors, gases, poor ventilation, and exposure to extreme weather conditions.
