Design Features

• Obverse: Features a new portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Joe Fitzgerald, based on a 1789 bust. It includes the word "Liberty" in Jefferson’s own handwriting.
• Reverse: Known as "Western Waters" or "Ocean in View," this design depicts the Pacific Ocean as famously described by William Clark in his journal: "Ocean in view! O! The joy!". It shows cliffs and the sea, commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition reaching the coast.
