The Kansas Department of Transportation is seeking a dependable, motivated mechanic with strong problem-solving skills to become part of our team!

KDOT is currently hiring an Equipment Mechanic for the District Three Shop in Norton, Kansas.

Job responsibilities may include but are not limited to: 

  • Performs a full-range mechanical overhaul & repair of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and equipment. This includes occasional repairs in the field.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and troubleshoots to determine the cause of failure on complex systems, including but not limited to, hydraulics and pneumatics systems.
  • Makes working diagnosis of mechanical failure by means of specialized testing equipment and visual or auditory checks. 
  • Performs tune-up, electrical repairs, and maintenance/adjustment on both automotive and heavy-duty equipment.

Compensation: 

  • Base Annual Salary:  $50,918.40
  • Base Hourly Pay:  $24.48

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Six months of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment. 

Post-Offer/Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • A CDL must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained. KDOT provides CDL training at no cost to the employee.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
  • The selected candidate for this position will be expected to have their own hand tools to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Applicants will be considered for the position without the required tools; however, the required tools must be available for use on the first day of work. 
  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT pre-employment/pre-duty drug test as a condition of employment in this position. (This position will also require you to participate in random testing, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.)
  • Any Commercial Driver who has received a Confirmed Positive Result or the Equivalent and has not successfully completed all Rehabilitation Program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position. (Per SOM 2.1.10).
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03. Each applicant (even non-residents) who is selected for a State of Kansas job vacancy must apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate within 10 days from the date of the offer letter by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's (KDOR) website at www.kdor.ks.gov/apps/taxclearance/Default.aspx .
