Job Summary: 

Draws and collects quality blood samples from patients and prepares those specimens for lab testing following established practices and procedures. Has direct contact with patients and creates an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and accurate manner. Requires on call rotation.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Education Required:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Valid Kansas drivers license with an acceptable driving record.

BLS certification, or must complete BLS certification within the first two weeks of employment.

As of October 1, 2017: Education documentation required for CLIA purposes.

Preferred:

Phlebotomy technician certification (PBT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other regulatory agency equivalent to the ASCP Proficient knowledge of medical terminology.

Six months of medical center experience.

Ability to manage stress through effective communication and multitasking.

Ability to deal understandingly and tactfully with ill patients and their families.

Ability to maintain working relationships with associates

Essential Functions:

Collects blood and various non-blood specimens for analysis through various procedures. This includes, but is not limited to blood draws, capillary sticks, urine, throat, nasopharyngeal swabbing, legal blood alcohols, urine drug screens, breath alcohols, hair drug screen collections.

Perform verification of patient demographic info/initials including patient initials post-venipuncture to verify tubes were labeled in their presence and that the name on the label is correct.

Responsible for completing all data entry requirements accurately including data entry of patient registration, pulling electronic orders from database, and processing specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting and freezing specimens as required by test order.

Administer oral solutions according to established training. 

Perform departmental-related clerical duties when assigned such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, faxq and answering of phone.

Research test/client information on all non HMC/HMG client orders and verify all written orders are completed with all the client/patient information. 

Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and temperature logs.

Secondary – required for the job, but mostly be exception; and

None:Coding Information (clinical information that is in (alpha) numeric format): ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT CodesFinancial Information/Insurance (information related to insurance, billing and payment): Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates
