Why are these scary people carrying foam swords?

What is LARP and LARPing?

    LARP is Live Action Role Play.  LARP is like interactive theater, but the audience is also the actors. It is a type of role playing game, like Dungeons and Dragons, but instead of players sitting around a table describing their actions and using dice to determine outcomes, they actually say and do the things in real life and if you succeed, you succeed!  Not all LARPS have combat, but the Hays LARP chapter (Called Hays Heroic) is a “boffer LARP.” We use padded foam weapons called boffers to simulate combat in order to move the story along.  We use bean bags to simulate magic and projectile weapons.

Wait, you actually hit each other? Is that safe?

    Absolutely. LARP is statistically safer than ballet.  Steps are taken and rules are in place to minimize damaging players in and out of combat. After all, it wouldn't be very fun to be constantly injuring ourselves! Our combat system is called “Lightest touch,” which is not dissimilar to fencing.  Full power swings are not welcome here! Since Hays Heroic is a chapter of the company Heroic Interactive Theater, players are also required to have an active membership to play, which also gives generous medical coverage should an injury happen while LARPing that was done within the rules of Heroic.  Also, there is a strict no alcohol/no drugs policy at events, so judgment and coordination is not impaired and it remains family friendly.

Don't you, you know, feel like a nerd?

    LARPers are made up of a variety of ages, vocations, and genders. Ok, only two genders, but if there was a third, they would LARP too!  We have players as young as 14 (minimum age without a guardian present) up to adults who work 9 to 5 then come and have a blast!  If you think you'll feel self conscious about LARPing, feel free to come and watch.  Who hasn't imagined escaping everyday life to something simpler, where you can feel powerful, needed, and free?  That's what LARP is for us!  It's a hobby that lets you be someone your normally aren't and do things life simply doesn't allow. That isn't nerdy. That's a dream come true.

Is it expensive?

LARP is a cheap date.  The first event for new players is free. After that, a membership to Heroic Interactive is required for legal and safety reasons, and can be bought on a monthly or yearly basis.  Events can run from $10-$35 in Hays depending on location and length, but beyond that the only costs are what you choose to put to into making your gear, which is entirely up to you, and can be as low as nothing if you make good use of resources already in your home.
