The Kansas Department of Transportation is looking for dependable, trainable, team players with good communication skills to become part of our family.

KDOT is currently hiring an Equipment Operator OR Equipment Operator Trainee in Hays

Position duties & responsibilities: Maintain highways & facilities through activities such as repairs, resurfacing, mowing.  Operate dump trucks, small & medium-size loaders, tractor, rollers & power brooms to perform various maintenance tasks.  Operate a loader or truck-mounted plow & spreader in snow & ice control operations.  Perform manual labor associated with maintenance activities, including the operation of miscellaneous equipment such as chain saws, weed eaters, pumps, compressors, jackhammers, generators, power tools & various hand tools.  Setup & remove temporary traffic control & serve as flag person for maintenance work zones.

  Those without a Class A CDL qualify as an Equipment Operator Trainee and receive on-the-job training to obtain a CDL within 90 days.  Equipment Operator Trainee pay is $17.85/hour.

  The Equipment Operator position requires a Class A CDL with air brake option at the time of hire. Equipment Operator pay is $19.16/hour.

A valid driver’s license is required at the time of hire.  

The positions are subject to pre-employment testing.
