DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Under supervision of the Fire Chief or other assigned supervisor, responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property; drives and operates pumping engines, aerial ladder trucks and similar fire protection equipment, and all emergency equipment. DUTIES: Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, hazardous material incidents, entry, ventilating, and salvage work; operates equipment and otherwise assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property; after the fire has been extinguished, performs cleanup and overhaul work and checks testing readiness for further alarms; assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment; while off duty, responds to major emergency calls; participates in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities; acts as lead man in absence of superior; participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical matter and attendance at scheduled drills and classes relating to firefighting techniques, first aid, and related subjects. Other Duties Include: Assists in maintaining fire station and grounds; performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics; ability to learn technical firefighting and emergency care and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; physical agility and endurance and ability to move persons weighing over 200 pounds; ability to walk, run, climb, crawl, and perform other similar movements; ability to react logically in emergency situations; adequate hand/eye/foot coordination for driving apparatus and operating equipment; normal vision, hearing, and ability to speak clearly; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school; training in emergency care at the First Responder level desirable. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class B driver’s license; ability to achieve Firefighter I under NFPA Standards within eighteen months of hire; certified at the Awareness Level for hazardous material within one year.
